Rocket League Ranks Explained (Bronze to Supersonic Legend)

Rocket League has 22 competitive ranks spread across eight tiers, and knowing exactly where you sit (and what is next) makes the climb far less frustrating. Here is the full ladder and how the system behind it works.

The full rank ladder

From lowest to highest, the tiers are:

  • Bronze (I, II, III)
  • Silver (I, II, III)
  • Gold (I, II, III)
  • Platinum (I, II, III)
  • Diamond (I, II, III)
  • Champion (I, II, III)
  • Grand Champion (I, II, III)
  • Supersonic Legend

Every tier except Supersonic Legend has three divisions. SSL sits at the very top and has no divisions, because it is the ceiling. It is also the rarest rank in the game, held by well under one percent of players.

How the ranking system works

Rocket League does not use ELO, despite what a lot of players say. It uses a hidden number called MMR (matchmaking rating) that behaves more like a Glicko system. Win against tougher opponents and your MMR jumps more. Lose to weaker ones and it drops harder. Your visible rank is just a friendly label wrapped around that hidden number.

A few things trip players up:

  • Each playlist is ranked separately. Your 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 ranks are independent, so you can be Diamond in 2v2 and Platinum in 3v3 at the same time.
  • Placement matches at the start of a season give you a provisional rank based on your prior MMR, so you rarely start from zero.
  • Division demotion protection stops a single bad game from dropping your tier immediately.

Where players get stuck

Two walls stop most players. The first is the jump from Diamond into Champion, where matchmaking gets noticeably harder and a single passenger teammate can hold you back for a whole season. The second is the Grand Champion grind, where consistency matters more than flashy mechanics. Past that, the GC3 to Supersonic Legend wall is the hardest stretch in the game.

Climbing efficiently

If you want to move up, focus on the boring fundamentals: rotation, positioning, and not double committing. Warm up before ranked, review your own replays, and play the mode you actually want to climb rather than spreading MMR thin across all of them.

If you are short on time or stuck against a wall, a boost from a Supersonic Legend gets you to the target rank cleanly, and duo queue lets you learn the habits of that rank while you climb. Either way, knowing the ladder is the first step. Now you know exactly where you are headed.
